The Paras 10 is a 10 mile endurance challenge which can be done as a normal run (which was the option I was doing) or as a military style even to be completed wearing boots, combat pants and carrying a 35lb Bergen (or rucksack) while completing the course. It is organised and marshalled by paratroopers and recruits and I was taking part in the Catterick event on the army base. It transpired that the route was run around the tank training grounds and so was a very very tough, super hilly undulating track on and off road. In fact at one stage I had to walk up one of the hills, clambering over rocks and gravel. It felt like I was back on the side of Scafell Pike trying to get to the top! I managed to complete the course in 1hr 23 mins and 4 seconds, crossing the line in 87th place out of 303 runners. The first 'Tabber' (those running with the full kit) crossed the line shortly after me with a time of just over 1hr 20 (those guys set off slightly after us plain runners) beating my time while carrying all that gear and running in boots. Full respect goes to those carrying the packs. I have no idea how they can be that fit - they were simply awesome. Maybe I can try that next year when I am not running in the Great North Run 7 days later!
