Friday night saw me running around Newcastle Town Moor dressed as a Starfleet Captain in uniform from the world of Star Trek. Not really my normal Friday evening type of activity, but fun nonetheless. Thankfully there was a reason to do this as I was completing the 15th of my 40 challenges - A fancy dress 5k run. This one was dreamt up as the regular Whitley Bay Parkrun were asking for people to take part in the Northern Frontrunners Pre-Pride festival LGBT 5K run. The reason was that the parkrun would get £50 donated to their funds for every 8 people that took part on their behalf. As 5k didn’t seem like a long enough distance to be classed as a challenge, it was decided that I would have to do it in Fancy Dress, hence the Star Trek Uniforms came out and the good people of Facebook and Twitter made the decision that I should go with the red, Jean-Luc Picard number rather than the yellow security one or the DS9/Voyager blue medical option! Of course there was no requirement to be L, G, B or indeed T, to take part and there were around 160 finishers of all descriptions took part. I managed to cross the line in position 51 after running around in sweltering temperatures whilst wearing long black leggings, long sleeved (and not very breathable) uniform top. The time wasn’t as bad as I had expected, finishing in 23:35 - not near PB by any stretch, but nor is my regular 5k run at the minute since the injury, but its several steps in the right direction! The whole event was lots of fun, the atmosphere was great and the goody bag packed, the highlight being the Starbucks giant chocolate coin, and of course the medal - another one to add to the collection.
